World Day for Health and Safety at Work 2023
April 28, 2023International Day of Women and Girls in Science
International Day of Women and Girls in Science was celebrated on February 11th to recognise the crucial role of women and girls in the field of science and to encourage them to pursue careers in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics). This day serves as a call to action to address the gender inequality and unequal representation of women and girls in STEM fields and to promote equal opportunities for them to participate and contribute to scientific progress.
From a business point of view, the importance of this day cannot be overstated. In today’s rapidly changing and highly competitive business world, innovation and technology play a critical role in determining the success of a company. Companies that fail to embrace diversity and equality in their workforce risk falling behind their competitors and losing the opportunity to stay ahead of the curve. At Enqip we believe in a workforce that promotes equal opportunity and celebrates the advances of women and girls in science based fields such as environmental science.
Incorporating diversity in STEM fields is not only the right thing to do but also the smart thing to do. Companies that invest in creating a diverse and inclusive workplace tend to perform better and achieve higher profits compared to those that do not. This is because diverse teams tend to be more creative and innovative, leading to new ideas and solutions that drive growth and competitiveness.
Moreover, having a diverse STEM workforce also helps companies better understand and serve their customers, leading to more personalised and effective solutions. For example, a company that has a diverse team of engineers and scientists working on environmental solutions is likely to produce a device that meets the needs of a broader range of customers and end users.
The underrepresentation of women and girls in STEM fields is not just a social issue but also an economic one. According to a report by the World Economic Forum, the world is facing a significant shortage of skilled workers in STEM fields. By 2025, it is estimated that there will be 2.4 million unfilled STEM jobs worldwide. To meet this demand, it is critical for companies to tap into the talent of women and girls and encourage them to pursue careers in STEM.
However, despite the efforts of many organisations and governments to address the gender gap in STEM fields, progress has been slow. According to a report by UNESCO, only 35% of the world’s students enrolled in STEM fields are female, and only 28% of all researchers in the world are women. This is a concerning trend that needs to be addressed to ensure that the world has the talent it needs to tackle the complex problems of the future.
One of the main reasons for the underrepresentation of women and girls in STEM is the lack of role models and support systems. Many girls and women are discouraged from pursuing careers in STEM due to a lack of exposure to successful female scientists and engineers and a lack of mentorship and support. Companies can help address this issue by providing mentorship and networking opportunities for women and girls and by promoting female role models in STEM fields.
Another important way that companies can support women and girls in STEM is by providing flexible work arrangements and equal pay. Many women are deterred from pursuing careers in STEM due to the demanding nature of the work, which can make it difficult to balance work and family life. Companies can help address this issue by offering flexible work arrangements, such as remote work and flexible hours, and by ensuring that women receive equal pay for equal work.
Finally, companies can also help address the gender gap in STEM fields by investing in education and outreach programs that promote STEM education for girls and women. This can include funding scholarships, sponsoring science fairs and competitions, and partnering with schools and universities to provide hands-on learning experiences. Enqip currently runs graduate programs that assist all graduates to extend their knowledge in the field of environmental equipment use.
International Day of Women and Girls in Science is an important reminder of the critical role that women and girls play in the field of science and technology and that companies which invest in creating a diverse and inclusive STEM workforce will also benefit.
